Hi,
In the late Summer/early Fall of 2016, I released Mariner, a lo-fi collection of folk songs about love and heartbreak. It'd been a simple affair. A collection of songs recorded simply and roughly. No frills. A mix of folk and punk recorded on a single microphone. After a month or so, I began recording the follow-up record in a cabin. It would, I soon decided, be more elaborately produced, and therefore more time would be required recording and mixing these new songs. I figured it'd take a year. Fall of 2017.
I ended up finishing a short story collection "It's So Cold in Alaska" (and the accompanying short EP, "NOSTOS,") instead. All the while new songs would enter, old songs would leave, and progress was akin to writing a book furiously while throwing out the old pages, because somewhere down the line a better iteration existed. Allen Ginsburg once said, "first thought, best thought," but I bet you he rewrote that phrase till he was happy with it.
Five and a half years went by. A hunk of sound whose songs were written, recorded and mixed in such disparate places as a friend's attic on the East Coast, a closed restaurant dining room, a cabin in the woods, the second story of a kayak shop, motels and hotels and airports and terminals, a trailer in a boatyard, a church in Nebraska, and a New York City hostel.
On this all went for most likely too long, until it didn't anymore, and the album was completed in the morning of March 25th, 2022, just hours before the album release party. Sometimes, in life, the only thing you really need to finish something is the deep, unrelenting fear of letting down everyone who cares about and supports you. This is, I'd guess, how anything ever gets done in our world, from writing school textbooks to building bridges to promotional emails.
I performed the entire album in full with the band Cheap Suits, of which I am a member. From sound to food, drinks to merch, set-up to take-down, other folks performing and some rad disc jockeying, everyone attending and those mad ones who kept dancing till they could no longer, it all was a team effort, and that concert will likely be the highlight of my artistic and performing life for a very, very long time to come. So, thank you to all them, and to every single person who has supported me in this pipe dream since forever and a half ago.
I hope you like How It's Going. I hope you play it loud. I hope you find it generous in spirit and accessible to the ears. I hope you glean real, visceral pleasure and the work holds up under multiple listens. I hope you have favorites and songs you skip. I hope you have songs that grow on you over time, hopefully the skipped ones. And...as fun as making this record was...I really hope the next one doesn't take another five years.
All the best,
Shane Kimberlin
